Heads from the North II, National Gallery of Australia

Cafe and Sculpture, National Gallery of Australia

Here’s another image of the Heads from the North sculpture at the National Gallery. The semi-open cafe faces immediately on to the marsh pond where the sculpture is installed, giving rise to the eerie images of disembodied heads staring impassively at cafe patrons.

Musee d’Orsay, Paris

Musee d'Orsay, Paris

We now return to your regularly scheduled travel photography. This picture of the Musee d’Orsay in Paris is taken from half-way up the museum’s translucent end wall, peaking between the steel beams which hold the structure together.

The Musee d’Orsay is a wonderful example of an industrial building being reinvented for a new lease on life: it used to be Gare_d’Orsay, and some suburban trains still use the station’s lower levels to this day.

Cosplayers, Supanova Sydney

And now for something a little different… I’ve been promising some people pictures from the Supanova convention which was held in Sydney a while back, so I thought I might put up a selection here on Journey Photographic as well.  This post is a bit of a departure from my one-post one-picture policy, but to me these images work best as a set, so I hope you’ll forgive me.

Supanova 2010: Cosplayers

One of the things I love best about photographing at these types of events is the constantly changing relationship between the individual cosplayers and the other attendees. One of the reasons I like photographing street performers and buskers is because of the interaction between the performers and the audience: cosplayers at a convention like Supanova take this interaction one step further. In a matter of minutes, an individual cosplayer can go from performer, to audience, to onlooker. Hopefully, these pictures capture some of that sense of interaction.

A con attendee pauses for a confrontation with a Dalek, while Harley Quinn and other attendees wander past. The Dalek was controlled by Qui-Gon Jinn, just out of frame.

Disney Princess cosplayers pose for the crowd, Supanova Sydney

Disney Princess cosplayers pose for the crowd. While cosplaying is seen as a traditionally anime-related pastime, there are a fair number of western-media-related characters represented, especially characters from sci-fi media, comic-books, and iconic children's movies.

Picture of the Terminator, Supanova Sydney

The Terminator stood sentinel at the entrance to the main hall. Despite the crowded room, onlookers gave him a noticeably wider berth than many of the other cosplayers, including the two black-cloaked cosplayers in the corner of the frame.

A Mario cosplayer, alone amongst the crowd. A few moments ago, Mario had been the centre of a wide crowd of photographers - now he stands unnoticed.

Captain Jack Harkness gets up close and personal with a Dalek, while the Doctors and audience look on. These impromptu scenes form at regular intervals, as different cosplayers move and interact with each other, and the audience.

So there you have it – proof I do occasionally take something other than travel pictures :)

Trees and Rock, Uluru

Picture of trees at the base of Uluru (Ayers Rock)

Trees at the base of the Rock

Thinking of Uluru as a big rock in the middle of the desert doesn’t really to justice to the complexity of the place, all the fascinating details and features of the formation which are only visible when you get up close and personal. The trees in this picture are some of the many nestled at the base of Uluru – and yes, these are full-sized trees. The black trail down the rock surface is actually algae, which grows in channels where rainfall flows down the surface.

Tourists, Buckingham Palace

Tourists, Buckingham Palace

Tourists mill in front of Buckingham Palace, London. To me, this picture captures the colourful chaos outside this major tourist attraction.

(For those curious about the distortion in this picture, this was taken at the extreme end of my 10-20mm zoom – in this case, I quite like the effect, since it matches the circular roundabout/monument on which we are standing.)
