I’ve been to London’s Hyde Park quite a few times now, but I think my favourite picture from there is one of my earliest, looking through the trees of the park down to the Serpentine.
Canary Wharf, London

Canary Wharf, London
Who wouldn’t want to have this for a view? Cityscapes don’t get much nicer than the lights of Canary Wharf shining over the Thames.
(In accordance with my normal custom, I’d link you to the Wikipedia page for Canary Wharf, but wikipedia has gone dark for 24 hours in protest against the proposed US SOPA and PIPA legislation – I protest I whole-heartedly endorse. Oh, and here’s the official WordPress statement in support of the strike.)
Repost: Smithfield Markets, London
Time for another repost from the archives. This picture in the Smithfield Meat Market was one of the first shots I took with my first DSLR. This photo was my first experience of the way interesting light can make an ordinary, everyday scene into something intriguing, and my first glimpse of how powerful a single figure could become in an image, regardless of their size.
Nelson’s Column, London

Nelson's Column, Trafalgar Square, London
This picture was taken early one foggy morning in London, when the sky was almost completely white, and the top of Nelson’s Column seemed to fade into the mist…

Face in the Crowd, Covent Garden, London

Face in a crowd, Covent Garden, London
When I’m in London, I try to make a point of visiting Covent Garden to photograph the world-class buskers, but on this occasion it was the crowds that caught my attention. While I was trying to get a photo that showed the sheer crush, a woman, somehow managing to negotiate her way through the largely stationary crowd with some speed, walked straight into my shot. This picture has always been one of my favourites, but it’s taken a couple of years before I made a final version I was happy with.
