Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin III

Black and white picture of Kilmainham Gaol, East Wing, Dublin

Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin

Another picture of the East Wing of Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin. In use for 128 years, it served as the prison for many of the leaders of the campaign for Irish independence.

ETA: milkyminx wrote this poem in response to this picture. Thanks milkyminx!

Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin (II)

Kilmainham Gaol, West Wing

"Beware the Risen People" - Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin

Another shot from Kilmainham Gaol, this time from the older west wing. The writing on the wall reads: “Beware of the Risen People, that have harried and held, Ye that have bullied and bribed.” The words are those of Patrick Henry Pearse, who was executed in Kilmainham Gaol for his part in the Easter Rising.

From a travel photography viewpoint, one of the challenges of Kilmainham is that entry is via guided tour only, and in everywhere except the east wing, the light levels are extremely low. You’re working with slowish shutter speeds, high iso, no tripod, and a requirement to keep up with a group while simultaneously trying to keep unwanted tourists out of the shot.  It’s no coincidence that the most distinctive shots of Kilmainham are taken looking up – it lets you shoot over the heads of other group members.

East Wing, Kilmainham Gaol

According to our guide, the Victorian-era east wing of Kilmainham Gaol was designed so that prisoners could only see out of their cells by looking up, in order to direct their gaze to heaven and encourage their repentance.
