Sydney Opera House, Australia

Picture of the Opera House against storm clouds, Sydney, Australia

Sydney Opera House

Just got back from a quick trip to Sydney.  While I was there for purposes other than photography, I managed to squeeze in a few shots here and there.  Here’s a picture of the Sydney Opera House that rather neatly illustrates the point of last week’s Travel Photography Tip -blue skies would have been nice for the cruise, but bad weather makes for better photography!  (And for those of you used to the normal brilliant white, this is what it looks like when it isn’t glowing in the sun.)

  1. The contrast between that cold “angry” sky and the warmth of the Opera House really makes this pop! I’d take that sky over a clear one any day for photos! Wonderful!

  2. Absolutely stunning! That SKY! The colors and textures play so well off each other. Just lovely JP!

Hubby might get the op to go to Australia….I’m torn. It is a REALLY long flight from Massachusetts! 🙂

  3. I’m glad you had time to take some photos because this abstract of the Opera is gorgeous, especially with that incredible sky above. So much more dynamic than a dull blue sky 😉 I think this is one of the best photos op the Opera I ever saw and I saw many of them!

  4. Wow! Absolutely gorgeous! I’ve never seen the opera house shot from this perspective. Love the contrast between the light color architecture against the dark stormy clouds.

  5. I absolutely agree and myself, I prefer skies that are either ominous with rain or the threat of storms, or at least laden with a beautiful cloudscape that alows me to use my ND grads to pull out definition and detail. Blue skies naturally have their place, but I love the the sky in this shot which delights my eyes. A fabulous frame that is like a work of art in itself. Beautifully captured.

  6. That sure looks amazing, with the clean crisp…. errrrrrh… white(ish) curves juxtaposed against that ominous grey and moody backdrop… Great shot… and I agree on bad weather too, although I have a tendency to convert to black and white when the weather is grim… This works superbly in colour though…

  7. Wow – what a stunning image! I love the dramatic sky and how the Opera House almost seems to glow. And the portrait format contributes to an even more dazzling effect. A truly magnificent shot!

  8. This is a piece of architecture that I love yet I’ve never truly seen it before – not this level of detail. Absolutely stunning.
